Watched the Bangladeshi Food vid from Fung Bros and finally got to try this place out (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5HQtAlupXk). First time having Bengali food and very impressed with the results. If you’ve never had it before and are familiar with typical Indian fare, it’s a lot of meat and fish with focus on subtler flavors rather less intense spices from Northern and Southern India. The spicy items were spicy but manageable.

The people who worked there were very helpful and very nice. The woman behind the counter told us what each dish was and suggested dishes that would complement what we ordered.

We got..

2 samosas, chicken, and singara (liver with potatoes), both delicious, the singara is served with a tamarind sauce.

Goat briyani was delicious. The rice was lightly spiced and nicely flavored by the goat’s gaminess. And the goat pieces were moist and much larger than I’ve seen at other spots.

Beef curry was amazing. I didn’t expect the beef to be so tender. The unctiousness of the beef was the center piece, and the medium curry it bathed in supported it with delicious medium spiced savory flavors.

To balance out the meal, we had green plantain and eggplant bharta, which are veggies mashed with potatoes and fresh chilid, both ok, were a nice change from the meat dishes.

Overall the flavors were great and the people were nice. Highly recommended and I’m definitely coming back to try the haleem.

Great location for all your Bengali needs!

This place is a fantastic combination of a grocery and a dining experience wrapped up into one store. My family has been visiting this location for ~10 years and the quality has never been sacrificed. The food options on the restaurant side are also quite good. Highly recommend Haat Bazaar if you are shopping to cook your favorite Bangladesh/South Indian dish or are craving some Bengali food!

Best Authentic Bengali food. I couldn’t keep my mouth from watering at all the selections they offered. My husband and I wanted to try a bit of everything as we had heard so much about it from our friends and make sure we got a full experience. We decided on daal bhorta, tomato bhorta, and aloo bhorta – they were all delicious. I preferred the tomato and aloo and my husband preferred the daal and tomato. Taste buds! We settled on the goru mongsho tehari which had an amazing fragrance to it and the spice level was perfect. We also had a chicken chop each, very delicious. Then we also decided to have chicken curry and keski mach. Both were superb. The spice level was on point for every piece. The waitstaff was nice, they’re busy and down to business.

Then we finished off the meal with a proper cha. It had excellent liquor, good taste, and perfectly sugared. We’ve gone back several times, each time we’re in NY, and are never disappointed.

Just so people know, if you’re not familiar with Bengali or South Asian style eateries, this isn’t your IHOP, Friendly’s, or American style restaurant like that. It’s a clean place! Don’t be discouraged that it’s joined with a market! The food is AMAZING! Also, it’s best to pay cash if you can, they do take cards but, cash is best.

This is one of my favorite Bangladeshi restaurants when I came to New York! You will see many local Bangladeshi at this place, and you will know their food is authentic and delicious!!! I would highly recommend the Biryanis and veggie dishes. Yum!

The worst customer service on planet. The waitress was super rude, did NOT come around once to ask how things were. We found hair in out haleem. It sucks that their food is really good. Maybe they can hire better employees.

Food: Best authentic Bengali restaurant in the neighborhood. Non-Bengalis beware, the food is generally very spicy, so be cautious when ordering!

Decor: Pretty clean, no complaints.

Service: Service is great, but a very no frills vibe. It’s generally a very busy spot, so it’s good to know what you’ll order in advance.

Sometimes they ruin the food by adding too much spice. I got my usual, beef tehari, and my mouth was on FIRE and nose running. Ruined my eating experience and gave me a stomachache. They put too much spice in it today, I guess. Their food is good when it’s not overloaded with hot peppers. To repeat from my last review, they reheat food in plastic containers which may not be the safest thing to do. The bathrooms are clean but single-person. No names in front of the food so foreigners can’t tell which is which. No proper menu. Their chicken patties are bomb.

“go for typical homely bangladesi/ bengali cuisines”

this is a perfect place for those Bengalis/ ghotis who are missing their typical Bengali cuisines… food will bring back the taste of home/mother’s food.
food items are on the display and you have the option to see them and order right at the main counter. I would keep cost in cheap range as we have ordered 10-12 items and bill was around 90. all items were good, right from baigun choup-alu bhaja-hilsa-goat curry-rohu fish with alu gobhi-kechki maach-laav chingri…
cons-
seating arrangement is not that attractive… it is more like around the corner type restaurant

Haat Bazaar is the Best Bangladeshi restaurant in Roosevelt Ave Jackson Heights. I’ve been going to this place for Years since I was Very young with my dad, and still love this place! Their prices are not bad at all, their food is always on point because my taste buds gets really excited! They always have a buffet in the front of the store so you tell them what you’ll like to order and have a seat! my favorite is Pani puri, Briyani , Naan & kabab.

Stopped by for iftar, the waiters were very polite, responsive and attentive. My group indicated the iftar boxes were a bit overwhelming and we’d share a few boxes rather than having a box each.

All I have to say is come here for the HALEEM. Spicy, yummy gooodness. Unfortunately they only give you two pieces of meat per order, it’s a thing. Tried asking for more, it was a nope. In any case, have the Haleem to stay, the to go orders are pre-prepared and packed (shrug).

Will be back forever and always.

We came here after my husband had a craving for bengali food. We ordered polau, beef curry, shrimp with kochur loti (veggie), rice (comes with daal/lentil soup), a kabob and another beef dish I believe they called kalo gosht (black meat). Everything we ordered was delicious and many of the items were spicy (which I love). The portions are good and prices very reasonable. Service was quick and over all friendly (they checked in on us throughout our meal). It is definitely very authentic Bengali food, just like I’d find at home. We went in around 11am and probably left around 12pm. I did notice that within that hour, they had a lot more food come out that were not there when we ordered our meal. If you like fish curries or bhortas I recommend going after 12pm because if I had seen those when we ordered I would have ordered differently. Should we be in NY again we look forward to eating here again.

The food here is delicious, it is a must for those that loves spicy bangali food. The goat haim is very addicted, we ordered one serving because we had no glue what’s the flavor like and when we tasted it, we had to order another one. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars is because there is no menu to pick your items from. Either you know exactly what you are ordering or you speak Bangali. I had to use google translate to order some of the food items and use google imagery. Overall it is a wonderful experience.

Lamb/Goat halim is phenomenal. But be warned it is spicy but in a good way. Fresh garlic naan, delicious! Chicken biryani…. mmmmmm. Yummy! We tried asking for the waitress’s name but it was hard to understand her. She’s super sweet and patient with us seeing as that we’re not from around there and really didn’t know what we wanted but she picked up on our body language and looking it up on your phone and showing pictures helped tremendously as well. Thank you internet. And thank you yelp for giving us pictures of the food in this place to show her what we wanted to try out. Definitely coming back here. Please be patient as well. They will not get to you right away but I think the food is worth it. That’s my opinion. Dig in!!!

Worst place to eat. I waited an hour for my food. Food arrived and the biryani had hair in it. Owner made a huge fuss and wanted to charge me simply because the biryani was heated. This is not the way to run a business. You can see how things are falling apart in there. I highly recommend no one eats there because you will end up in the nearest hospital which is elmhurst hospital!

If you want Bangladeshi food this is your place.

There is a generous selection of rice, meat, vegetables and fish to choose from. If you are a fish person the waitress recommended the ilish maas but I rejected it because I’m not into fish. I got the chicken korma which was good. I would pass on the kabobs and shami kabob. I thought it lacked some flavor. The biryani was great though except my boyfriend and I messed up by getting two plates. One plate was more than enough to share for two people . You’ll be surprised how filled you get there so order a few things at a time and share with your partner if you have one.

When you enter the restaurant, talk to one of the waitresses and they will seat you and ask what you want. Be mindful, they might start speaking to you in Bangla especially if you look brown but I didn’t have any communication issues when I spoke some English. The restaurant is a little cramped inside but everything’s fine once your seated and eating. I think prices were decent. They didn’t give me a physical menu (I don’t think they have one) so I didn’t know how much the prices were of each dish. But if you look at my picture everything ended up costing me 30 which is pretty good in my opinion.

Horrible, customer service. Waited on the line for good 10 min to order my food to go. No concept of line or who’s next. Staff are in there own world, ignoring customers. I was questioning myself, as I see if They are doing a favor for me! WTF?!?

After quite a search for fresh baby goat, I found this place. Though it is priced on the higher end, trust me, the goat is of good quality and to die for! In comparison to the other shops, this place is a lot more cleaner and well organized. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended.

I am a Bengali so fish, Bengali food, the Kolkata Biryani, are items I miss the most and find here. Ilish with shorshe, Rui with cauliflower, even the aloo chokha!!!

This is where I go when I am missing home, and being able to speak in my mother tongue has nothing to do with it.

If you enjoy Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi food and are looking for a deviation from the stereotypical chicken tikka – go forth and find your bliss! If you are looking for anything more than a hole in the wall, you are probably in the wrong place

I love Bengali food and whenever my Bengali friends are unable to cook homemade for me this is where I head. Lots of food choices on display in a window case up front that you select from before being seated. The food is well seasoned and decent sized portions.

If you like Indian food then give Bengali food a try-I love Indian food but to me Bengali food has a more powerful, intense array of flavors that are like magic on your tongue.

Note: i read some of the other reviews where people mentioned a language barrier. The manager or owner speaks English and is very good at helping with selections.

The best authentic Bangladeshi food in Jackson Heights. I have been going there for years. Their prices were decent and hey had a wide range of food including vegetarian, chicken/goat curries, biriyanis, and fish dish. The restaurant does not have menus and the food is displayed in the front but the I would defiantly recommend Halim, Biryani and make sure to have their amazinggggg Chai. Every time I go to Jackson Heights I make sure to stop by for Chai.
If you’re looking to try authentic Bengali Dishes, then this place should be your stop. But if you are hygiene freak don’t bother going there it’s not a fancy atmosphere. Don’t be shock if you see people eating with their hand instead of using utensils cause that’s how we desi people eat but the place do have arrangement to clean your hand after.

Cons- Staff always talks among themselves and you would have to work really hard to get their attention.
-Language barriers
-unhygienic

    Cons:
-they use a microwave to heat your food, sometimes in plastic containers
-language barrier may be an issue if you’re not bengali
-if i recall there are no names in front of the food so you must ask what is what, also no menu
-some employees are just plain dumb (to the guy who was cleaning up the crumbs/stray food particles from the counter and some of it was being dragged into the trays of food as he wiped down, so gross)
    -sometimes dirty and crowded

    Pros:
-the beef thehari is so good plus the chicken pastries
    -good seating
    -clean bathroom

    • 1 check-in

    -unhygienic
